The Johnson County Republican Party holds a rare distinction in Texas politics: it is one of the few county-level parties in the state to own its headquarters outright. The facility was donated in June 1994 by Evelyn Gustafson, who, alongside her husband, John, served as a foundational trailblazer in building the county's Republican infrastructure from the ground up.

The party's current standing is the result of a decades-long transformation from post-Civil War Democratic dominance into an entrenched Republican stronghold. Johnson County's political realignment began taking shape after World War II as local voters shifted toward conservative national candidates. Aside from backing Democrats in 1964 and 1968, Johnson County has voted reliably Republican in every presidential election from 1972 onward, culminating in complete local GOP leadership today.

That alignment is reflected across the county’s current local, state and federal delegations:

• National Representation: The county is divided between Texas’s 6th Congressional District, represented by Jake Ellzey, and the 25th Congressional District, represented by Roger Williams. In the U.S. Senate, the county is represented by John Cornyn and Ted Cruz.

• State Representation: At the Capitol in Austin, the county is represented by State Representative Helen Kerwin (House District 58) and State Senator Phil King (Senate District 10).
